Black-banded Barbet
Psilopogon javensis

The adult Red-crowned Barbet lives in tropical forest, forest edge, plantations, and wooded foothills of Java and nearby islands. It feeds mostly on fruit, especially figs, and also takes insects and other small invertebrates from branches. Adults move through the canopy with direct flight and strong perching feet, often advertising territory with repeated barbet calls. A notable trait is its habit of nesting in an excavated tree hole, where the enclosed chamber protects eggs and chicks.
