Rough Violet Ground Beetle
Carabus problematicus
This nocturnal ground beetle hunts across woodland floors, moorland, and heathy ground, sheltering beneath stones and dead wood by day. It chases and bites a range of small invertebrate prey with powerful mandibles. Its dark body often shows a rough, violet-metallic sheen in the light. When threatened, it can release defensive chemicals and rapidly run for cover.
