Sockeye Salmon
Oncorhynchus nerka

Adult sockeye salmon spend much of their lives feeding in the cold waters of the North Pacific and large lakes, where they chiefly eat zooplankton and small aquatic animals. They undertake strenuous migrations into their natal freshwater systems to spawn, often navigating rapids and leaping obstacles. During the breeding run, adults develop a vivid red body and greenish head, and most stop feeding entirely. After spawning, the adults usually die, returning nutrients to the stream ecosystem.
