Alpine Marmot
Marmota marmota

Alpine marmots inhabit high-elevation meadows, rocky slopes, and alpine pastures across parts of central and southern Europe. Adults live in social colonies centered on deep burrow systems, where they shelter from predators and survive long winter hibernation. They feed mainly on grasses, herbs, flowers, roots, and other nutritious plant matter gathered during the brief mountain summer. A sharp, whistling alarm call warns nearby marmots when danger approaches.
