Southern African Pilchard
Sardinops sagax

Southern African pilchards inhabit the cool, productive coastal waters of southern Africa, especially along the western and southern coasts. Adults feed chiefly on plankton, filtering tiny organisms from the water with their fine gill rakers. They are fast, silvery schooling fish and form enormous seasonal aggregations during the famous sardine run. Their movements help support predators ranging from seabirds and dolphins to sharks.
