Whooper Swan

Cygnus cygnus

Whooper Swan

Adult Whooper Swans breed on northern wetlands, lakes, and tundra pools, then winter on sheltered coasts, estuaries, and inland waters farther south. They feed mainly by grazing on aquatic plants, roots, and submerged vegetation, though they also take small aquatic animals. Powerful and territorial in the breeding season, adults defend nesting areas with hissing, wing slaps, and forceful neck strikes. Their loud, trumpet-like calls and yellow-and-black bills distinguish them from similar swans.
