Bogong Moth
Agrotis infusa

Adult Bogong moths emerge in southeastern Australia and undertake a remarkable seasonal migration to the Australian Alps. They spend the summer clustered in cool, dark alpine caves, entering a dormant state known as aestivation. Nocturnal adults fly at night and may take nectar from flowers, while the return migration brings them back to lowland breeding areas. Their enormous migration is an important food source for alpine animals, including the critically endangered mountain pygmy-possum.
