Southern Lapwing
Vanellus chilensis

Southern Lapwings inhabit open grasslands, wetlands, farm fields, and other sparsely vegetated areas across much of South America. Adults forage on the ground for insects, spiders, worms, and other small invertebrates. They are notably vigilant and will fly low over intruders, diving and calling loudly to defend a nest or young. Their long legs, pointed wings, and distinctive head crest make them conspicuous in open country.
