Rufous-collared Sparrow

Zonotrichia capensis

Rufous-collared Sparrow

The adult Rufous-collared Sparrow is a common bird of open grassland, farmland, gardens, and mountain slopes across much of South America. It spends much of its time hopping and scratching on the ground for seeds, small insects, and other invertebrates, while retreating to shrubs or fences to sing. Males defend territories with a clear, variable song that differs noticeably among local populations. Its bold black-and-white head stripes and rusty neck collar make it readily recognizable.
