Spotted Salamander
Ambystoma maculatum

Adults are nocturnal forest salamanders that spend most of the year hidden in underground burrows, rotting logs, and moist leaf litter. They emerge on rainy nights to feed on worms, slugs, insects, and other small invertebrates, and they migrate to temporary woodland pools to breed in early spring. The bright yellow spots warn predators of noxious skin secretions, and their embryos are famous for hosting symbiotic algae inside the egg capsules.
