Douglas' Squirrel
Tamiasciurus douglasii

An adult Douglas' squirrel lives in coniferous forests of the Pacific Northwest, especially among fir, spruce, hemlock, and pine. It moves rapidly through branches and is strongly territorial, often scolding intruders with loud chattering calls. Its diet is centered on conifer seeds, with fungi, green vegetation, berries, insects, and occasional bird eggs also taken. A notable habit is building cone middens, stored piles of cones that can be used as food reserves through winter.
