Odorous House Ant Queen
Tapinoma sessile (queen)

Odorous house ant queens are larger, fertile females that remain within protected colonies in soil, rotting wood, stones, and building voids. Fed by workers, they lay eggs that develop into the colony's brood, while workers gather honeydew, nectar, sweets, and small insects. Colonies may contain multiple queens, a trait that helps this ant establish large, persistent populations. When disturbed, queens share the species' chemical defense that produces its characteristic rotten-coconut odor.
