Mule Deer

Odocoileus hemionus

Mule Deer

Adult mule deer inhabit western North America, from dry sagebrush basins and desert scrub to pine forests, chaparral, and alpine meadows. They browse shrubs, twigs, leaves, acorns, forbs, and seasonal grasses, often moving between higher summer range and lower winter range. When threatened they use high, stiff-legged bounds called stotting to cross rough ground quickly and signal fitness to pursuers. Males grow forked antlers each year and use them in displays and clashes during the rut.
