European Polecat
Mustela putorius

The European polecat occupies woodland edges, wetlands, farmland, and hedgerows across much of Europe, usually sheltering in dense cover, burrows, or old buildings. A mainly nocturnal and solitary hunter, it feeds on small mammals, frogs, birds, eggs, and carrion. When threatened, it can release a powerful-smelling secretion from its anal glands, a defense shared with other mustelids. Its dark facial mask and pale-edged ears are distinctive features.
