Central American Agouti
Dasyprocta punctata

The Central American agouti is a swift forest-floor rodent found from southern Mexico through Central America into northwestern South America. It eats fallen fruit, seeds, nuts, fungi, and tender plant matter, often sitting upright to hold food in its forepaws. Adults are important seed dispersers because they bury food caches and forget some of them, allowing trees to germinate. When alarmed, an agouti may stamp its feet, give sharp calls, and flee in fast, bounding runs through dense understory.
