Tundra Swan
Cygnus columbianus

Adult Tundra Swans breed on shallow Arctic tundra ponds and wetlands, then migrate to sheltered coastal waters, estuaries, and inland lakes. They graze on aquatic plants, roots, tubers, and grains, supplementing this diet with small aquatic invertebrates. Pairs are strongly territorial around nesting areas, using hissing, posturing, pecks, and forceful wing strikes to drive away intruders. Despite their large size, they are powerful long-distance migrants, traveling between Arctic breeding grounds and temperate wintering sites.
