African Clawed Frog
Xenopus laevis

The adult African clawed frog is a fully aquatic frog of ponds, marshes, and slow streams across sub-Saharan Africa, often resting among mud and vegetation. It is an opportunistic predator and scavenger, taking insects, worms, crustaceans, small fish, and other amphibians with sudden lunges. Its clawed hind toes help tear food and stir through the bottom, while its sensitive lateral-line system detects movement in murky water. Adults can survive harsh dry periods by burying into mud until water returns.
