Argentine Black and White Tegu
Salvator merianae
Adult Argentine black and white tegus inhabit warm grasslands, forests, wetlands, and disturbed areas across much of eastern and central South America. They are active, wide-ranging omnivores that use powerful jaws to take fruit, eggs, insects, carrion, and small vertebrates. Adults shelter in burrows and can become seasonally dormant during cool weather. A notably intelligent lizard, this tegu is also known for its bold black-and-white banded pattern and robust build.
