European Nightjar
Caprimulgus europaeus

The European nightjar breeds in open woodland, heathland, and clearings across much of Europe and western Asia, then winters mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. It is a crepuscular and nocturnal aerial insectivore, catching moths, beetles, and other flying insects in its broad mouth. During the day, its mottled plumage lets it rest almost invisibly on the ground or along a branch. Males give a distinctive churring song and may clap their wings in display flights.
