Common Warthog
Phacochoerus africanus

Common warthogs inhabit open savannas, grasslands, and lightly wooded country across sub-Saharan Africa. They graze on grasses, roots, tubers, fallen fruit, and occasionally carrion, often kneeling on their calloused forelegs while feeding. Adults shelter in abandoned aardvark burrows and commonly enter rear-first, leaving their tusks pointed toward the entrance as a defense. Males develop especially large upward-curving canine tusks used in fights and to deter predators.
