Secretarybird
Sagittarius serpentarius
An adult secretarybird patrols open African grasslands on long legs, walking great distances while searching for snakes, lizards, insects, rodents, and small birds. It hunts mostly on the ground, using rapid stomps and kicks rather than aerial attacks. Adults can fly and roost in trees, but their most famous behavior is killing dangerous prey with precise, powerful foot strikes. Their black head plumes give them a distinctive crest once compared to quill pens tucked behind a secretary’s ear.
