Eastern Chipmunk

Tamias striatus

Eastern Chipmunk

Adult Eastern Chipmunks live in deciduous woods, rocky edges, yards, and shrubby areas, where they dig complex burrow systems with nesting chambers and food stores. They are solitary, alert, and mostly active by day, often darting between cover with the tail held upright. Their diet includes seeds, nuts, berries, fungi, insects, and other small animal matter, with large amounts carried in expandable cheek pouches. A notable fact is that they can cache substantial stores of acorns and seeds underground to survive winter periods of reduced activity.
