Sable Antelope
Hippotragus niger
Adult sable antelope live in African savannas, miombo woodland, and grassland edges, usually grazing on grasses and browsing leaves when needed. They are alert, muscular antelopes that can run quickly but are best known for standing their ground with long, curved horns. Males use horn clashes and threat postures in contests, while adults may slash or jab with their horns when cornered by predators. A notable fact is that their scimitar-shaped horns can exceed a meter in length in mature individuals.
