Black Mamba
Dendroaspis polylepis

Adult black mambas inhabit savannas, rocky hills, open woodland, and scrub across parts of sub-Saharan Africa, often using termite mounds, tree hollows, or abandoned burrows as retreats. They hunt birds and small mammals with fast, accurate strikes and potent neurotoxic venom. When threatened, an adult may raise the front of its body, gape its dark mouth, hiss, and strike if escape is blocked. Despite the name, its body is usually olive, gray, or brown; the famous black coloration is inside the mouth.
