Rock Monitor
Varanus albigularis

Adult rock monitors are large terrestrial lizards of African savannas, bushveld, and rocky habitats, often sheltering in burrows, termite mounds, or rock crevices. They are active hunters and scavengers, eating insects, snails, reptiles, birds, eggs, small mammals, and carrion. When threatened, an adult may inflate its body, hiss, bite, claw, and lash with its heavy tail. This species is one of Africa’s heaviest monitor lizards, built more for power and endurance than speed.
