Painted Bunting
Passerina ciris

The adult Painted Bunting lives in brushy fields, thickets, woodland edges, and coastal scrub, breeding mainly in the southern United States and wintering farther south. It forages low in vegetation for grass seeds, weed seeds, and insects, often staying hidden despite its vivid plumage. Males defend territories with song and displays, while females are bright green and more cryptic. The male’s red, blue, green, and yellow feathers make it one of North America’s most colorful songbirds.
