California Quail Chick
Callipepla californica (chick)

California Quail chicks hatch in chaparral, brushy woodland edges, and grassy cover, following their parents soon after leaving the nest. They peck at small insects and seeds, relying heavily on protein-rich insects during early growth. When alarmed, chicks freeze or quickly scurry into low vegetation rather than taking sustained flight. Their striped, buff-and-brown down provides camouflage against dry leaf litter and soil.
