Sonoran Desert Tortoise Hatchling
Gopherus morafkai (hatchling)

This newly hatched tortoise emerges in Sonoran Desert scrub, rocky washes, and grassland habitats, staying close to cover such as shrubs, rocks, and shallow shelters. It eats tender grasses, wildflowers, and other small pieces of desert vegetation when conditions are favorable. Its soft-looking but already protective shell is vital at this vulnerable stage, and hatchlings grow slowly while avoiding heat and predators.
