Bullsnake Hatchling
Pituophis catenifer (hatchling)

Bullsnake hatchlings emerge in open grasslands, sandy scrub, farmland, and prairie habitats across central and western North America. They shelter beneath debris or in small mammal burrows and hunt tiny lizards, frogs, nestling rodents, and insects. Even at this small stage, a hatchling may hiss, flatten its head, and vibrate its tail when disturbed; its bold blotched pattern helps break up its outline among dry vegetation.
