California Gnatcatcher Nestling
Polioptila californica (nestling)
This downy nestling remains in a small cup nest concealed low in coastal sage scrub or chaparral shrubs. It is fed tiny insects and spiders by both parents, begging with soft calls and a wide, brightly colored gape. Its mottled gray down and hidden nest placement help reduce detection by predators.
