Desert Cottontail Kit
Sylvilagus audubonii (kit)
Desert cottontail kits are born in shallow, fur-lined nests hidden beneath desert shrubs or grasses in arid scrub and open brush. They remain concealed for much of the day while their mother visits briefly to nurse them, reducing the chance that predators locate the nest. As they grow, they begin nibbling tender grasses, herbs, and other nearby vegetation. A kit is born with fur and closed eyes, becoming mobile soon after its eyes open.
