Western Terrestrial Garter Snake Neonate
Thamnophis elegans (neonate)

Western terrestrial garter snake hatchlings emerge in grasslands, woodland edges, wetlands, and streamside cover across western North America. They are secretive but active young hunters, using vegetation, leaf litter, and shallow water for shelter while searching for tiny prey. Their diet includes earthworms, slugs, small amphibians, and young fish where available. Even at this small stage, they possess mildly venomous saliva and may release a foul-smelling musk when handled.
