Common Birdwing
Troides helena

The adult is a large tropical butterfly that visits flowers in forest clearings, edges, and planted gardens. It feeds on nectar with a coiled proboscis and flies with steady, conspicuous wingbeats. Males patrol for mates while females search for suitable host vines on which to lay eggs. Like many birdwings, it is visually striking and generally avoided by predators because of chemical defences gained earlier in life.
