Richardson's Ground Squirrel Pup
Urocitellus richardsonii (pup)
Richardson's ground squirrel pups are born underground in grassland burrows across the northern Great Plains, where they remain protected by their mother during their earliest weeks. They nurse on milk before gradually sampling grasses, seeds, and tender leaves near the burrow entrance after emerging. A notable fact is that pups are born hairless and blind, developing fur and opening their eyes before they first venture above ground.
