Rough-skinned Newt

Taricha granulosa

Rough-skinned Newt

The adult rough-skinned newt inhabits moist forests, ponds, lakes, and slow streams along the Pacific coast of North America. It eats worms, insects, small crustaceans, and other small aquatic or terrestrial prey, moving between land and water with the season. Its skin carries tetrodotoxin, one of the most potent chemical defenses known in amphibians. When threatened, it may arch the body and show the bright underside as a clear warning to predators.
