Deer Ked
Lipoptena cervi

Adult deer keds are flattened flies that seek deer and other hoofed mammals in woodland and forest-edge habitats. Newly emerged adults fly to a host, then shed their wings and crawl through the fur with strong claws. They feed on blood through piercing mouthparts and remain concealed close to the skin. Females retain developing larvae internally instead of laying eggs.
