Mexican tetra
Astyanax mexicanus
Adult Mexican tetras live in rivers, pools, and subterranean caves in northeastern Mexico. They forage on small invertebrates, plant matter, detritus, and other available food. Adults are agile swimmers that evade danger with rapid turns and tail-powered bursts. Cave populations are a celebrated example of evolution, often having greatly reduced eyes and pigment.
