Spur-thighed Tortoise
Testudo graeca

The adult spur-thighed tortoise lives in warm, dry habitats such as Mediterranean scrub, open woodland, rocky slopes, grassland, and traditional farmland. It is mainly herbivorous, browsing on wild greens, flowers, stems, and dry plant matter. Adults defend themselves by withdrawing into a domed shell, and males may ram or bite during courtship and rivalry. A notable feature is the spur-like tubercle on each thigh, which helps distinguish this species from some other Mediterranean tortoises.
