Lesser Diving-beetle
Acilius sulcatus

The adult lesser diving-beetle inhabits still or gently flowing freshwater, especially ponds rich in aquatic plants. It swims actively beneath the surface, hunting small invertebrates and scavenging animal material with its mandibles. Though it lives in water, it regularly surfaces to replenish an air bubble carried beneath its wing cases and can fly to new ponds.
