Shaded Pug Caterpillar
Eupithecia subumbrata (caterpillar)
This caterpillar feeds on the flowers and developing seeds of bedstraw and other low-growing plants in grasslands, field margins, and gardens. It moves slowly among stems and relies on its muted colouring to blend with vegetation. When disturbed, it may hold still or rear up slightly. Its slender body can closely resemble a small piece of dried plant material.
