Ferruginous Duck
Aythya nyroca

The adult Ferruginous Duck is a compact diving duck of reed-fringed lakes, marshes, oxbows, and slow wetlands. It feeds mostly by diving for aquatic plants, seeds, mollusks, insect larvae, and other small water animals. Adults are shy and often keep close to thick vegetation, slipping underwater when disturbed rather than fighting openly. The male's rich chestnut plumage and striking pale eye make it one of the most distinctive small diving ducks of Europe, Asia, and North Africa.
