Pied Avocet
Recurvirostra avosetta

Adult Pied Avocets inhabit open, shallow saline wetlands, estuaries, mudflats, and coastal lagoons. They feed by sweeping their long, upcurved bills side to side through the water, snapping up small crustaceans, insect larvae, and other invertebrates. During nesting season, adults may fly at intruders and strike with their wings in vigorous defensive displays.
