Granulated Ground Beetle
Carabus granulatus

The adult is a ground-running beetle of damp grassland, marsh edges, field margins, and open woodland, especially where cover and moisture are available. It hunts at night for soft-bodied prey such as worms, slugs, insect larvae, and other small invertebrates. Its ridged, often bronzy wing-cases give it strong protection, and this species is notable among Carabus beetles for sometimes having functional wings. When threatened, it can release foul defensive chemicals from glands near the rear of the body.
