White-clawed Crayfish Juvenile
Austropotamobius pallipes (juvenile)

This juvenile lives in clean, cool streams and rivers, sheltering beneath stones, roots, and submerged debris. It is most active after dark, when it searches the streambed for algae, plant fragments, tiny invertebrates, and carrion. Its small claws can pinch in defence, while its tail helps it flick rapidly backward from danger. Young crayfish must shed their hard outer shell repeatedly as they grow.
