Golden Ground Beetle
Carabus auratus

The adult is a fast-running ground beetle of fields, gardens, hedgerows, and open woodland edges. It hunts mostly on the ground, biting prey such as slugs, caterpillars, worms, and other small invertebrates with strong mandibles. Its metallic green-gold wing covers are striking, but they are fused, so it relies on running rather than flight. When threatened, it can release a foul chemical secretion from the rear of the body to deter attackers.
