Caribbean Hermit Crab
Coenobita clypeatus

Adult Caribbean hermit crabs inhabit coastal scrub, beaches, and nearby tropical forest, returning to moist areas to protect their breathing surfaces. They are chiefly nocturnal omnivorous scavengers that eat fallen fruit, leaf litter, carrion, and other organic material. Despite living on land, they retain modified gills and must maintain humidity inside their shell.
