Eurasian Hoopoe
Upupa epops
The adult Eurasian Hoopoe is a striking bird of open country, orchards, pastures, savanna-like woodland, and village edges across Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa. It walks and runs on the ground while probing with its long curved bill for insects, grubs, pupae, and small invertebrates. When alarmed or displaying, it raises its fan-shaped crest, and its butterfly-like flight makes it instantly recognizable. Breeding females and young are famous for foul-smelling gland secretions that help protect the nest from predators and microbes.
