Xingu Freshwater Stingray
Potamotrygon leopoldi

The Xingu freshwater stingray inhabits clear, fast-flowing stretches and rocky-bottomed areas of Brazil's Xingu River. It spends much of its time resting on the bottom, ambushing insects, crustaceans, and small fish. A powerful tail bearing venomous spines provides formidable protection from predators. Its striking black-and-white spotted pattern is characteristic of this highly restricted river species.
