Blue Tree Monitor Hatchling
Varanus macraei (hatchling)
Blue Tree Monitor hatchlings live among the low branches and dense foliage of rainforest trees on Batanta Island, Indonesia. They are alert climbers that use their long toes and sharp claws to escape danger into cover. Small insects, spiders, and other tiny animals make up much of their early diet. Their vivid blue markings help break up their outline among patches of light and shadow.
