Azalea Caterpillar Caterpillar
Datana major (caterpillar)
This larva lives on azaleas and other broadleaf shrubs in eastern North American woods, gardens, and hedgerows. It chews foliage steadily, often feeding alongside other young caterpillars before becoming more solitary as it grows. Its black-and-yellow striped body and habit of raising both ends when disturbed make it conspicuous rather than hidden.
